Background of the Study

Youth restiveness is a significant issue in many parts of Nigeria, especially in regions with high levels of unemployment, poverty, and social instability. Jalingo South LGA, located in Taraba State, has witnessed a growing number of youth-related social issues, including unrest, drug abuse, and involvement in criminal activities. Local governments, as key stakeholders in addressing community issues, have a responsibility to develop and implement initiatives aimed at curbing youth restiveness.

In response to these challenges, the local government in Jalingo South has launched several initiatives to engage the youth, including skills development programs, sports activities, educational outreach, and entrepreneurship support. These initiatives aim to provide young people with the skills and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and reduce their involvement in negative activities. However, the effectiveness of these interventions in addressing youth restiveness in Jalingo South LGA remains underexplored. This study seeks to investigate the role and impact of local government initiatives in mitigating youth restiveness in the region.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the implementation of various youth-focused programs in Jalingo South LGA, youth restiveness continues to be a persistent issue. High levels of unemployment, lack of educational opportunities, and limited access to vocational training contribute to the ongoing problem. There is a need to critically assess the local government initiatives to understand their strengths and weaknesses in addressing the root causes of youth restiveness.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of local government initiatives in addressing youth restiveness in Jalingo South LGA.

  2. To identify the key factors contributing to the persistence of youth restiveness in the region despite government interventions.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving local government policies to better address youth challenges and foster positive engagement.

Research Questions

  1. What local government initiatives have been introduced to address youth restiveness in Jalingo South LGA?

  2. How effective are these initiatives in reducing youth restiveness and promoting positive youth engagement?

  3. What challenges does the local government face in addressing youth restiveness, and how can these be overcome?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Local government initiatives have significantly reduced youth restiveness in Jalingo South LGA.

  2. The effectiveness of local government initiatives is limited by factors such as inadequate funding, poor implementation, and lack of youth participation.

  3. Youth restiveness continues to persist due to systemic issues like unemployment and lack of opportunities despite government initiatives.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the local government initiatives aimed at addressing youth restiveness in Jalingo South LGA, Taraba State, . Limitations include the challenge of measuring the long-term impact of such initiatives and potential bias in the responses from local government officials and youth participants.
